TRAMA Mattie Ross è una quattordicenne fermamente intenzionata a portare dinanzi al giudice, perché venga condannato alla pena capitale, Tom Chaney l'uomo che ha brutalmente assassinato suo padre. Per far ciò ingaggia lo sceriffo Rooster Cogburn non più giovane e alcolizzato ma ritenuto da tutti un uomo duro. Cogburn non vuole la ragazzina tra i piedi ma lei gli si impone. Così come, in un certo qual modo, gli verrà imposta la presenza del ranger texano LaBoeuf. I tre si mettono sulle tracce di Chaney che, nel frattempo, si è unito a una pericolosa banda.
“I wicked flee when no one pursues them. " With this passage from the Book of Proverbs that opens the film is yet another challenge for the Coen. This time the two directors decided to deal with at the same time a kind that (albeit in their own way) already explored (the western) and an icon of cinema as John Wayne. It was not an easy task to make a remake of Henry Hathaway, which won him the Academy Award for his protagonist. But, as always, the Coens are able to build a total work while respecting staff (most original) spirit of the novel by Charles Portis to which the screenplay is based.
Already there is a biblical quotation mark. Mattie is forced to seek justice from becoming purely determined and away from the iconography of the woman of the West (Calamity Jane, Vienna / Joan Crawford and a few other examples aside) but also by a religious fundamentalism that has its roots. The Coen visually eliminate the prologue suggesting the story as a flashback memory of the woman Mattie. A woman became too early because that was born in a world dominated by ignorance ("My mother can barely make the spelling of the word cat") and death.
is a film about detachment, loss, separation The Grit. Mattie did not kiss the corpse of his father (as requested) but will assist the hanging of three convicted two of them can express their repentance or their anger. is left behind and face a trip to a kind destined to bring, meeting after meeting and confrontation after confrontation, reflection on a way of understanding the social comparison and not too far from that in place in these our troubled times . Because, let's not forget, even the most seemingly abstract film of Coen always bites (and with great clarity) on the present.
