Karmik Koala Ubuntu 9.10 will use as your default bootloader GRUB2 , the new software that the GNU Foundation has developed to strengthen the existing GRUB.
Tutto il codice è stato riscritto da zero , e la compatibilità con tutte le precedenti feature non è assicurata. L’obiettivo della GNU è stato quello di produrre un nuovo bootloader, moderno, dal design modulare, estendibile e che fosse facilmente supportato da molte più architettura hardware.
Le principali funzionalità di GRUB 2 sono: supporto allo scripting , interfaccia utente grafica, caricamento dinamico di moduli in esecuzione, internazionalizzazione (supporto ASCII e altri codici), framework per la gestione di moduli (fileystem, file, devices, drivers, terminali, OS loaders), installazione cross-platform, modalità rescue.
